Carlos Alan Autry is an actor, politician and former NFL football player. He is better known for his role of Captain Bubba Skinner in the series "In the heat of the night". He appeared in several films and TV movies and was later elected mayor of Fresno in California.

Alan Autry was born in Shreveport in Louisiana, he is the son of Carl Autry and Verna Brown. His parents divorced when he was only 1 year old and he took the name of Carlos Brown. He worked alongside his mother and stepfather Joe Duty in the fields of San Joaquin Valley, California, planting and harvesting from Cotton, grapes and other harvests. They traveled through the valley, living in workers' camps. When he was 12 years old, they settled in Riverdale in California.

In high school, he was Quaterback for the Riverdale Cowboys. He received a sports scholarship from the University Pacific in Stockton, California, where he was Quaterback for the tigers. In 1975, he was drafted by the Green Bay Packers. When his football career ended, he came to Hollywood and began in 1978 in the film "Remember My Name".

Played professional football for the B.C. Lions in the Canadian Football League in 1978 under the name Carlos Brown.

He played NFL Football for the Green Bay Packers as a second string quarterback in the 1975 and 1976 seasons.

His daughter Lauren can be seen In The Heat of the Night episode "Every Man's Family" she is the little girl in the park who comes up to Alan and says "Hey mister can we have our frisbee back?"

Was elected mayor of Fresno, Ca. on 7 November 2000. He will be sworn into office in January 2001, for a four year term.

On October 29, 2003 he announced that he will not seek a second term as the Mayor of Fresno. His term expires in January, 2005. He said he wants to spend more time with his wife and children and is interested in continuing his acting career. Because of his popularity with Fresno voters, political analysts in Fresno believe he could have easily won re-election.

On March 2, 2004 he easily won re-election as Mayor of Fresno with over 72 percent of the vote. At first he did not want to seek a second term. He changed his mind after the candidate he endorsed as his replacement dropped out of the race. His second term will run from January, 2005 until January, 2009.
