Prather began his career by playing in theatrical productions in Los Angeles before taking his first steps in the cinema in 1975 in the film The Day of the Locust by John Schlesinger. She then played in several other films, including Cheech and Chong's Next Movie (1980), Happy Birthday to Me (1981) and The Slugger's Wife (1985).
In parallel with his film career, Prather has also worked in television, especially in popular series such as Starsky and Hutch, the streets of San Francisco and Magnum. She also played in TV movies such as The Dream Merchants and The Dreamer of Oz: The L. Frank Baum Story.
In the 1990s, Prather continued to work in the entertainment world, but it was mainly focused on television productions, especially in series such as Beverly Hills 90210 and Sister, Sister. She also played in television films, such as Christmas in Connecticut and in Christmas Memory.
