Born in Bellaire, Ohio in May 1957, he was among the last graduating class of The Windsor Mountain School in Lennox, Massachusetts. Attended Marlboro College in Vermont. Performed in summer stock and regional theaters in Vermont, Michigan and West Virginia before settling in Chicago and joining The Remains Ensemble. Levine worked on stage at Remains, Wisdom Bridge, The Goodman and Steppenwolf Theatres throughout the 80s before he began working in tv and film.

Ted Levine owes Jonathan Demme one of his most memorable roles: the serial killer fetishist Jame "Buffalo Bill" Gumb, whose terrifying appearance concluded the silence of the lambs. A crime in the head marks his third collaboration with the director, after a recent participation in the Truth on Charlie in the role of the worrying Emil Zadape.

Originally from Parma in Ohio, a licensee of dramatic art of the University of Chicago, Ted Levine made his first arms during his studies at Marlboro College in Vermont, and performed in New York and Ann Arbor (Michigan) before D 'Register for his repertoire various shows by Steppenwolf Theater, including "Buried Child" by Sam Shepard (in a staging by Gary Sinise) and the remakes Theater Ensemble, such as "Moby Dick", "70 scenes of Halloween", "The Time of Your Life "by William Soyan and" The Tooth of the Crime "by Sam Shepard. Like "Sex and the City" (1998) star Chris Noth ("Mr. Big"), he attended Marlboro College in Vermont for a time in the 1970s.

After his terrifying turn as "Buffalo Bill" in The Silence of the Lambs (1991) he's had some trouble getting parts other than sadistic psychopaths. He generally tries to choose parts more along the lines of ordinary family men and unfriendly co-workers to get away from the creepy shadow of Buffalo Bill.

After appearing in The Silence of the Lambs (1991) , he appeared in Heat (1995), which was directed by Manhunter (1986) director Michael Mann , and featured Manhunter villain Tom Noonan .
