Biography for John Goodman

Tubby, jovial actor who brings an unusual degree of intelligence to his roles, even when playing morons. Formally trained (one of his college acting classmates was Kathleen Turner), Goodman began his movie career ignobly with small roles in the likes of C.H.U.D and Revenge of the Nerds (both 1984). He quickly graduated to better roles in better movies, portraying a hapless guy advertising for a wife in True Stories (1986), one of the lunatic prison escapees in Raising Arizona (1987), and the sad, aging exfootballer in Everybody's All-American (1988). That same year, he hit the big time (on TV, anyway) as the good-natured husband/father in the hit sitcom "Roseanne." By now established as a top character actor, Goodman landed key costarring roles as Sally Field's husband in Punchline (1988), a sanguine New York cop in Sea of Love (1989), a wisecracking flight instructor in Always (also 1989), and a comically macho exterminator in Arachnophobia (1990).

Despite his bulk, and his skill at limning unsympathetic characters, Goodman seems to strike a responsive chord when cast as an amiable slob-although that didn't make a success of his first starring vehicle, the tailor-made comedy King Ralph (1991), and it didn't keep the Coen brothers from making him a homicidal salesman in Barton Fink (1991). Goodman tackled the mythic character of baseball great Babe Ruth in The Babe (1992), earning excellent notices even from critics who didn't like the film. Another actor might have played the lead in Matinee (1993), that of a flamboyant movie huckster/producer, as a caricature; Goodman gave him warmth and likability. He also reinterpreted Broderick Crawford's performance as a self-made Harry Brock in the 1993 remake of Born Yesterday and contributed a voice to the animated We're Back: A Dinosaur's Story (also 1993). He was then cast-ideally, in most people's minds-as Fred Flintstone in the 1994 adaptation, The Flintstones. As a modernday Everyman, Goodman has unlimited potential.

Eager to have a career in American football, John Goodman entered the Southwestern Missouri State University, but a knee injury thwarted this vocation. He then chose to turn to the theater and entered the Dramatic Art Department of the University, where he cochered, among other things, Kathleen Turner or Tess Harper. He moved in 1975 to New York, and after a first job as a bouncer, he accumulated theatrical performances, in particular production off on Broadway, then TV, and cinema.

After small roles in B series such as C.H.U.D. (Douglas Cheek, 1984), he turns in more important films like The Big Easy (Jim McBride, 1986) or Arizona Junior, The second film by Ethan Coen and Joel Coen (1987), who will reuse him four times (Barton Fink In 1991, the big jump in 1994, The Big Lebowski in 1998 and O'Brother in 2000).

It was in 1988 that he definitively became popular thanks to his role as Dan Conner, Mari de Roseanne in the series of the same name. Second important role in contemporary American cinema, he is also comfortable in the thriller, like Mélodie for a murder (Harold Becker, 1989), the comedy with Panic on Florida Beach, and even the musical film Tel Blues Brothers 2000 (John Landis, 2000).

John Goodman is an American actor born June 20, 1952 in Affon, in the state of Missouri. He is known for his roles in many movies and television series, notably in the film "The Big Lebowski" and in the television series "Roseanne". Goodman began his career in the theater, where he played in many productions in New York. He also worked for radio and television before embarking on cinema.

Goodman is considered one of the best actors of his generation, thanks to his talent to embody complex and complex characters. He has won numerous prizes for his performances, including a Primetime Emmy Award for his role in the television series "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip". He is also nominated for an Academy Award for his role in the film "The Artist".

Apart from his acting career, Goodman is also a committed activist for environmental protection. He has participated in many awareness campaigns and has given time and money to environmental organizations. He is also an active supporter of the American Saint Orleans football team.

In summary, John Goodman is an accomplished and respected actor, recognized for his talent and his commitment to important causes. It is considered one of the greatest actors of its generation and continues to fascinate spectators around the world with its remarkable performance.
