Biography for Lynda Carter

Lynda Carter (born Lynda Jean CĂłrdoba Carter on 24 July 1951 in Phoenix, Arizona) is an American actress. She is best known as the star of the 1970s fantasy adventure TV series, Wonder Woman.

Carter grew up an avid reader of the Wonder Woman comic books. She went to Arcadia High School in Phoenix, then to Arizona State University, but after being voted the most talented student she dropped out in order to pursue a career in music. She toured as a singer with several rock groups before returning to Arizona in 1972.

She entered a local beauty contest, and achieved her first national fame by winning Miss World U.S.A. in 1972, representing Arizona. After taking acting classes at several New York acting schools, she began making guest appearances on T.V. shows such as Starsky and Hutch, Cos, and Nakia. However, her acting career did not take off until 1975, when she landed her starring role in the Wonder Woman television series.

Her earnest performance as the scantily clad superhero endeared her to fans and critics, and the series lasted for three seasons. Thirty years after first taking on the role, Carter continues to be closely identified with Wonder Woman, and is so identified with the role, that it proved difficult for movie producers to find a suitable candidate to play the character in subsequent aborted productions (work on the most recent attempt was announced in 2005).

Carter's other credits include the title role in a 1983 biopic of Rita Hayworth, and a variety of television specials. She also starred in a couple of short-lived TV series. During the 1970s and 1980s she also recorded several albums and made numerous guest appearances on variety television programs in a musical capacity during this time.

Carter has been married twice. Her first was to her former agent, Hollywood producer and manager Ron Samuels on 28 May 1977. They were divorced in 1982. The second marriage was to lawyer Robert Altman (not to be confused with the filmmaker of the same name) on 29 January 1984.

Born July 24, 1951 in Phoenix (Arizona), Lynda Carter began her career by being Miss World 1973. Mexican parents, she then sang in various groups through the United States. Very attractive, intelligent, the beautiful young woman with blue eyes decides to become an actress and went to Los Angeles in 1975. After several participations in series (like Starsky and Hutch in 1976), she obtained the role of Wonder Woman the same year . The series pilot is a huge success and Lynda Carter becomes a star overnight!

For 4 years and 60 episodes, Lynda Carter plays the role of this Amazon with supernatural powers. Much appreciated by children, the character of Wonder Woman also seduces adults with the very sexy outfit of Lynda.

After the series in 1980, Lynda performed in various shows in Las Vegas. Divorced from her manager in 1983, she remarried to Robert Altman, a lawyer in 1984. She decided to leave Hollywood to live Washington and became a mother of James and Jessica.

She continued her career as an actress in various TV movies (Rita Hayworth in 1984, Daddy in 1991, Family Blessing in 1996).

Discounting the studios for several years, Lynda Carter is making her comeback today. She appears in several films as "Super Troopers" in 2001 or "Mount Extrem" in 2003.

The actress is also the spokesperson for various associations in the United States. The actress also had to appear in the film Wonder Woman currently in pre-part.

Trivia

Singer

Of partial Hispanic extraction.

Youngest of 3 siblings.

Does motivational/professional speaking engagements.

Performed in a band during high school called 'Just Us', which consisted of a marimba, a congo drum, an acoustic guitar, and a stand-up bass played by another girl. When she was 17 she joined another band for more exposure called 'The Relatives' (because two members were cousins) which opened at the Sahara Hotel casino lounge in Las Vegas for three months. Because Lynda was under 21 she had to enter the casino through the kitchen. Gary Burghoff (who played Radar O'Reilly in M.A.S.H) was the drummer. In 1970 she joined the last band she sang with, called 'The Garfin Gathering with Lynda Carter', and their first performance was in a brand new San Francisco hotel that had no sidewalk entrance built yet, so they played to mostly the janitors and whatever hotel guests parked their cars in the underground garage. But she performed so well under such intimidating circumstances that Howard "Speedy" Garfin nicknamed Lynda "Wonder Woman"!

Released a solo album entitled 'Portrait' in May 1978.

Won the title of Miss World USA representing her home state of Arizona in 1972.

A friend sat Lynda and her present husband, lawyer Robert Altman, together at a social dinner in the hopes that the two would hit it off.

Father is caucasian and mother is Mexican.

Measurements: 38-26-38 (Miss World USA pageant), 38-20-37 (her claim as Miss World USA, 1972), 37 1/2C-25-35 ("Wonder Woman" wardrobe) (Source: Celebrity Sleuth magazine)

Performed many of her own stunts on "Wonder Woman" (1976) including hanging from a helicopter, to the nervousness of ABC.

Ended each of her television specials singing the song "Always".

While filming Battle of the Network Stars (1976) (TV), she poured champagne over the head of host Howard Cosell after her team won the tug of war contest not knowing he had a hairpiece. Howard was really upset. Later, whenever she saw him at a restaurant in New York, she would sent over a bottle of champagne and he always knew who it was from.

Owns the DVD release rights to her television specials.

When asked, during her on-line Lens Express chat on November 8th, 1999, who she would like to portray Wonder Woman in a big screen movie version, she stated that she would prefer either actress Catherine Zeta-Jones or supermodel Cindy Crawford.

Scenes cut from Francis Ford Coppola epic Apocalypse Now (1979).

In the film "Sky High" Lynda plays Principal Powers at a high school for the children of superheroes, who is a comet !

On the 1977 "Circus of the Stars" Lynda was the target for David Janssen, who threw daggers at her! He came close, but luckily, he missed her every time !
