The Immortal (The Immortal) was an American television series which was broadcast between 1971 and 1972. The series was based on the character of Ben Richards, a man who was immune to death after being exposed to a radioactive substance. This immunity allows her to live forever, but she also forces him to hide his secret to avoid being exploited by others.

Ben Richards travels through the United States using different identities and working for various employers to survive. He meets many interesting characters and finds himself involved in dangerous situations, but his ability to die always allows him to get out of it.

The series was created by Roy Huggins and was broadcast on ABC. It was played by actor Christopher George in the role of Ben Richards. The series was rather well received by criticism and won several prizes, including an Emmy Award for the best special effects in 1972. Unfortunately, it was not renewed for a second season due to low audiences.

Trivia

According to the statements of Robert Spech, the creator of the series, "the Immortal" could have or had to be one of the greatest successes in the history of American television. Indeed, the series was an adaptation of a novel published in 1962 and the pilot TV movie broadcast by ABC in 1969 had obtained more than encouraging audience scores. However, during its weekly programming, "the immortal" did not manage to obtain the expected success and the production stopped at the end of 15 episodes.

Embodied by Christopher George who had just completed the series "Commando du Désert" (a program designed by Tom Gries and broadcast between 1966 and 1968), as well as by Barry Sullivan in the role of John Braddock, the TV "The Immortal" was scheduled as part of the anthology "The ABC Movie of the Week" (a real institution on American television from the 60s and 70s and a great provider of series available after television of spectacular audience scores). Theoretically, there should not be right there, but, faced with the success recorded, the Paramount studios decided to start a weekly series, a perilous company if it is because requiring high quality scenarios in order to illustrate in a relevant way such a strong concept.
