Major John Macgillis of the United States of America is, how to say, rather conservative. Bull Dog's journalist Polly Cooper is rather pacifist and liberal. Nevertheless, when they meet the first time, love at first sight is instant and intense, and they marry less than 24 hours later.

But now, Polly and her children from a previous marriage must learn to become a family of navies, while Major Macgillis must learn to become a dad of three girls ... it's far from being won !!!

Major Dad is an American television series which was broadcast for the first time in 1989. The series features Gerald Mcraney in the role of John D. "Major Dad" Macgillis, a USMC navy who must adapt to family life after marrying a woman who has three teenage girls. The series follows the comic and sometimes poignant adventures of the Macgillis family while they learn to live together and sail in the difficulties of daily life.

The series was created by James Komack and produced by Aaron Spelling. It was broadcast for three seasons on CBS, from 1989 to 1992. In addition to McRaney, the cast included Pam Dawber in the role of Polly Cooper Macgillis, the wife of Major Dad, and Susan Sullivan in the role of Maddie "Maddie" Stillwell, a friend of Polly and mother of three children.

During his three seasons, Major Dad received numerous awards, including a Primetime Emmy Award for the best make -up and a People's Choice Award for the best new series. The series was also nominated for two other Primetime Emmy Awards, for the best special effects and the best accessories.

Although the series is mainly comical, it also tackled serious subjects, such as racism, sex discrimination and homosexuality. In one of the most memorable episodes in the series, Major Dad and his family face racism when they move to a new city and Polly's daughters are faced with prejudices and discrimination on the part of their classmates.

The building shown at the opening of the show when they lived on Camp Holister Marine Base is actually a building at Quantico Marine Base in Virginia. It is across from the military lodging on the main road.
