In a small town in Mississippi, the chief of the police, white, and the chief inspector of the district, Black, try to work together despite all their differences, both professional and moral.

In the heat of the night (in the Heat of the Night) is an American television series which was broadcast for the first time in 1988. The series features the character of Virgil Tibbs, a detective from the Police of Philadelphia who is transferred to the small town of Sparta, Mississippi. Tibbs, which is black, faces discrimination and xenophobia on the part of the white inhabitants of Sparta.

During the series, Tibbs worked with the local police chief Bill Gillespie, to resolve crimes and maintain order in the city. Despite the differences between the two men, they learn to work together and to respect each other.

In addition to dealing with racial discrimination, the series also addresses subjects such as corruption, sexism, rape and domestic violence. The characters also face personal problems such as divorces, mental health problems and difficult family relationships.

The series was a critical and commercial success, winning several awards and awards. She also launched the career of several of her actors, notably Carroll O'Connor, who played the role of Bill Gillespie, and Howard Rollins Jr., who played the role of Virgil Tibbs.
