Synopsis

This series, immortalized by the music of Lalo Schifrin and its entry into the matter, via a tape recorder, "Hello, Mr. Phelps. Your mission, if you accept it ... ", features a team of American secret agents, MIM members (Impossible Mission Force) to whom the most delicate missions are reserved. Each of these spies is an expert in a field: make -up, costumes, development of very sophisticated equipment ...

In most episodes, the team intervenes either in countries in Latin America, all fictitious, or in Eastern European countries. Their missions are very diverse and very dangerous: coups, destabilization, disinformation, manipulations, conspiracies, substitutions, infiltration, counter-revolutions, etc. In the context of the Cold War, they safeguard the interests of the United States and its allies: mustachi dictators or Balkan satraps generally pay the price.

Their operations are more or less legal, and it is for this purpose that they are ritually warned: "If you or one of your agents were captured or killed, the State Department would deny having been aware of your actions. Good luck, Jim. »»

Their means are incredibly sophisticated: lookalikes, actors, wax dolls, counterfeit money, staging, miniaturized electronics, imitation, disguises, cosmetic chick ... often infiltrated at the very heart of puppet diets, the spectator fears perpetually unmasked.

At the end of each episode, invariably, they just leave the banana republic in time where they have just brought order to the same armored van, the duty accomplished.

Mission: Impossible was an American television series broadcast between 1966 and 1973. It was inspired by a radio program and a film of the same name released in 1966. The series featured agents of the Mission Mission Impossible, a Secret organization which was responsible for carrying out dangerous and difficult missions. Each episode started with the recording of a cassette which contained a mission given to the team. The mission was often complex and involved infiltration, staging and disguises to deceive the enemy. The team was led by the main character Jim Phelps, played by Peter Graves. Other members of the team included the specialist in disguise Rollin Hand, interpreted by Martin Landau, and the electronics specialist Barney Collier, played by Greg Morris.

The series was very popular and was broadcast in many countries, including France. She was also parodied in other television and cinematographic productions. In 1996, a new version of the series was produced, with Tom Cruise in the main role. This version was a great success and was followed by several successful films, including Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation in 2015 and mission: Impossible - Fallout in 2018.

Trivia

Even if the series has as a main "character" a team, there is still a star: Peter Graves, archetype of the American reassuring with steel nerves and snow hair, embodying the team leader, Jim Phelps. We generally do not see him doing nothing special, it is the only one has not having a specific specialty. He seems to receive the orders of some distant higher service which we know almost nothing, and never discusses the technical solutions envisaged by his acolytes, however demented as they are. For him, everything is normal: he has confidence in them because they are the best ...

This series, very innovative in its form, experienced considerable success but was stopped because of its exorbitant cost for the time.

In 1988, Mission Impossible, 20 years after resuscitating the series but the success was not there, it stopped after two seasons.
