Punky Brewster is an American television series which was broadcast for the first time in 1984. The series follows the adventures of Penelope "Punky" Brewster, an 8 -year -old girl who was abandoned by her parents and who lives in a building in 'Apartments with his dog, Brandon. One day, she meets Henry Warnimont, a widowed and grumpy photographer who ends up adopting it.

Punky is a little girl full of life and temperament, who loves to get dressed in an eccentric way and who likes to have fun with her friends, notably Margaux, Cherie and Allen. Although she is often stubborn and has trouble following the rules, Punky is fundamentally kind and generous, and she always tries to do what is right.

Trivia

The name of the Punky dog, Brandon, comes from the name of the director of NBC programs, Brandon Tartikoff

In reality, there is indeed a real Punky Brewster, although his life does not really have relationships with that of the little girl in the series. NBC’s programs director Brandon Tartikoff had fallen in love during his childhood of a girl older than he looked like a tomboy, who bore the name of Punky Brewster. Years later, he called his first child Punky. He also thought that it would be an excellent name for a series, and that is how the series bore this name. NBC lawyers therefore undertook to find the real Punky Brewster. She was married to a lawyer in Connecticut, and therefore received royalties for the use of his name. She even appeared in Guest-Star as one of Punky's teachers

NBC decided to stop the series when its audience could no longer fight against '60 minutes' competition on CBS. Colombia Pictures TV, which had acquired the syndication rights of the series, produced the new episodes, in order to make the syndication profitable since only 44 episodes were produced during the two seasons of Punky Brewster. All the following episodes were then broadcast on local televisions during their choices, and this from the fall of 1987. This had already happened with other former dead series caused by a lack of audience, such as 'Fame', or 'Ricky or the beautiful life' ('Silver Spoons')

Only seasons 1 and 2 have been broadcast in France, and are currently available on DVDs. The seasons 3 and 4 will be released on DVD in 2017 in VOSTFR.
