Born on May 24, 1962, in Harlem. Attended Julia Richmond High School. He performed in a dance class there and later auditioned for Louis Falco, the choreographer for the film "Fame." Actually attended New York's High School of the Performing Arts for a year before being kicked out. He was therefore perfectly cast as Leroy in the film, which won Academy Awards for best song and original score. Like his character in the film, Ray had never had professional dance training but had an abundance of raw talent. In 1982 he toured Britain, to perform with other "Fame" cast members in 10 concerts. "The Kids From Fame," a television special about the tour, was broadcast in the United States a year later.

In 1980, Ray obtained the main role in the film Fame, a musical drama that featured a dance and music school in New York. The film was a commercial success and won numerous prizes, including the Oscar for the best original song for "Fame". Ray then played in the television series derived from the film, in which he embodied the character of Leroy Johnson, a talented but rebellious student who was fighting to succeed in the dance school.

In addition to his acting career, Ray was also a singer and recorded several solo albums. He also continued to dance and choreographed for many shows and events. Unfortunately, Ray died prematurely at the age of 41 in 2003, following a viral infection. His brief but flourishing career has earned him sustainable recognition as one of the greatest talents of his generation in the world of dance and entertainment.

Trivia

In real life, he was expelled from the New York School for the Performing Arts where the series was set.

Born in Harlem, he landed the part of Leroy in Alan Parker's film, 'Fame',when he was 17, after skipping school to go to the auditions.

Known for his wild, rebellious character Leroy in the TV series "Fame," the similarly-styled Gene attended New York's High School of the Performing Arts, but dropped out after a year due to the strict discipline.

Appeared in a "Fame" reunion documentary entitled, "Fame Remember My Name," which was taped in April 2003 for the BBC.

He was HIV-positive at the time he suffered a stroke in June, 2003. He died a few months later on November 14.
