Biography for Katherine Helmond

Katherine Helmond (born July 5, 1934 as Catherine Marie Helmond in Galveston, Texas) is an American film and television actress.

Helmond is known for her role as Jessica Tate, the matriarch from the TV sitcom Soap. She was a lead player on the series from 1977 until it was cancelled in 1981. She later starred as Mona Robinson in the sitcom Who's the Boss?.

More recently she has guest starred on Everybody Loves Raymond as Ray's mother-in-law. She also appeared in the 1985 film Brazil as Mrs. Ida Lowry, a plastic surgery and youth-obsessed mother of the principal character Sam Lowry (Jonathan Pryce).

It was in 1971 that she started in Arthur Hiller's hospital with George C. Scott and Diana Rigg. The same year, she turned in Believe in Me with Jacqueline Bisset. Subsequently, the actress only played in TV movies until 1975, where under the direction of Robert Wise, she went on board the Zeppelin. A year later, it was the immense Alfred Hitchcock who hires him for a family plot. In 1977, she discovered the joys of the sitcom with Soap, parody of the Soap-Opera where she crosses Billy Crystal and Robert Urich. The series earned him a Golden Globe. In 1978, she turned in the mini-series, Pearl then in 1981, she met Terry Gilliam on the set of the delusional bandits. The actress continues to shoot in various TV movies, then in 1984, she became the hectic mona. A role that goes to delight her and she leaves from time to time to play in feature films. She thus finds Terry Gilliam in the Kafkaïen Brazil. When the series stops, the actress turns out to be less prolific, is forgotten and plays on rare occasions. In 1998, we recognized it in Las Vegas Parano… by Terry Gilliam!

Katherine Marie Helmond is an American actress born on July 5, 1929 in Galveston, Texas. She was trained in the theater and dance before starting her acting career in Broadway in the 1950s. She won a Tony Award in 1975 for her performance in the musical "The Great God Brown".

Helmond is best known for his roles on television, especially in the series "who is the mistress of my house?" and "Soap". In the first, she embodies the divorced and independent mother Jessica Tate, while in the second, she plays the conservative and manipulative businessman Mona Robinson. She also played in the series "A nanny of hell" and in the sitcom "Alice".

Helmond also played in several films, notably "Brazil" by Terry Gilliam, "Time Bandits" and "The adventures of Baron de Munchausen" by Gilliam, as well as in "The Magician of Oz" by Victor Fleming. In addition to her Tony Award, she was also appointed for a Primetime Emmy Award for her role in "Soap".

Helmond has been married to David Christian since 1951 and they have a daughter, Elizabeth. She continued to work as an actress until her death in 2019, at the age of 89.
