Biography for Michael J Fox

Born Michael Andrew Fox in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, he adopted the "J" as an homage to character actor Michael J. Pollard. Moving several times during the course of his childhood, Michael and his family settled in Burnaby, a suburb of Vancouver. At the age of 15, he made his professional acting debut in the situation comedy _"Leo and Me" (1976) (TV)_ .

Moving to Los Angeles at the age of 18, Fox appeared in several small parts and a television series, "Palmerstown, U.S.A." (1980) before landing the role which would bring him to prominence in "Family Ties" (1982). His other films include Bright Lights, Big City (1988), The Hard Way (1991), Light of Day (1987), Doc Hollywood (1991) and the three Back to the Future films.

In the year 2000, the actor of Canadian origin Michael J. Fox defeated the column by announcing that he ended his career. Since 1998, he had been known to have been affected by Parkinson's disease (a disease against which he had been fighting secretly for 7 years already). He decided to fully invest in the fight against this terrible disease within the foundation he created and which bears his name. He hopes to bring together significant funding allowing the search to move forward and find a remedy before 2010.

Michael J. Fox his real name Michael Andrew Fox was born on June 9, 1961 in Edmondon (Alberta), in Canada. With his parents (his mother is the actress Phyllis Fox) her three sisters and her brother, he spent his city childhood in town until the family finally landed in Burnaby B. C, in the suburbs of Vancouver.

Like many Canadian kids, he is passionate about ice hockey and dreams of making a career there. In adolescence, he discovered other interests. He tries his hand in creative writing, discovers art and begins to play the guitar with rock'n 'roll groups. Then, little by little, his desire to become an actor will be born and assert himself.

At 15, we discover it on the screen in a television series "Leo and Me". At 18, he decided to try his luck in Los Angeles. He struggles for a moment winning small roles in TV movies. He obtained his first role in the cinema in a film produced by Walt Disney, "Midnight Madness". The consecration of Michael J. Fox, who has now replaced the Andrew A with the J in honor of actor Michael J. Pollard, will not come from cinema, but from television. He won a role in a series entitled "Family Ties" which will last 7 years (from 1982 to 1989) and meet immense success. He plays a conservative young man, Alex P. Keaton, obsessed with money and politics, raised by two hippie parents with whom he still lives ... His work will be rewarded with 3 Emmy Awards and 1 Golden Globe.

It is during these years of triumph on television that his career at the cinema will start, with "Back to the future" (1985) by Robert Zemeckis. This film which is both an adventure, a fantastic novel and a comedy, propels it to the American box office. The film is such a success that he finds Robert Zemeckis and his partner Christopher Lloyd for a second episode in 1989, "Back to the future II" and a third episode in 1990, "Back to the future III".

Meanwhile, he married actress Tracy Pollan, who played the role of her first girlfriend in the series "Family Ties". They have 3 children, Sam Michael (born in 1989), Schuyler Frances and Aquinnah Kathleen (twins born in 1995).

In 1989, he filmed in the excellent film by Brian de Palma "Casualties of War" (French title: "Outrages"). He leaves his roles of eternal teenagers to interpret a soldier in a very just and very moving way during an operation in Viet-Nam. After the success of the "Return to the future" trilogy, his career runs out of steam a little and he multiplies the appearances in small films that do not know any success. In 1995, it was "The American President" ("President and Miss Wade") a comedy by Rob Reiner, who revived him. Then come "The Frighters" ("Ghosts against Ghosts" in 1996) by Peter Jackson, a fantastic comedy where he was transformed into a murderous ghost hunter, and the same year, "Mars Attacks" by Tim Burton.

But it is still and always television that makes him an international star. He triumphs in the television series Spin City, a politico-tarte with cream, tailor-made for him whose last episodes he unfortunately shot at the beginning of 2000.

Michael J Fox is a Canadian actor known for playing in several successful films and television series. He is best known for his role as Marty McFly in the return to the future trilogy and for having embodied the character of Alex P. Keaton in the television series host family.

Fox was born in 1961 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He grew up in a family of five and began his acting career at the age of 15, playing in television advertisements. In 1982, he obtained his first important role in the Host Family television series, for which he was nominated for the Emmy Awards and the Golden Globe Awards.

In 1985, Fox obtained its most famous role to date in return to the future, which earned it a nomination for the Academy Awards. He also played in the two suites of this film, return to the future II and return to the future III, which were both of the business successes. In addition to his roles in these films, Fox has also played in other popular films such as Doc Hollywood, the Réveil de la Force and Mars Attacks!.

In 1991, Fox announced that he was suffering from Parkinson's disease, a degenerative neurological disease. Despite this news, he continued to work in the entertainment industry, playing in films and television series such as Spin City, the London Wolf-Garou and Kill curiosity. In 1998, he created the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, a non -profit organization aimed at finance research on Parkinson's disease and find a remedy.

Over the years, Fox has received numerous awards for his work as an actor, including five Emmy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award. In 2016, one of the country's highest civil distinctions in Canada was an officer of the Order of Canada. In addition to his acting career, Fox is also the author of several books, including a memory on his life with Parkinson's disease, entitled "Lucky Man".

Has forbidden any of his kids to quit high school for Hollywood, demanding that they at least finish high school and maybe attend 1-2 years of college.

According to an interview with Fox, he originally decided to use the middle initial J instead of his own A because he didn't want teen magazines to use headlines such as "Michael, A Fox!"

Is a vegetarian.

Sister is stage (Shaw Festival) and TV actress Kelli Fox.

Was not the first choice to play Alex P. Keaton on "Family Ties" (1982). He was only chosen after Matthew Broderick, who was originally considered for the role, refused to have a long-term TV obligation.

Has written his own book titled "Lucky Man" about Parkinson's and other things he has to deal with in life.

When filming Doc Hollywood (1991), he noticed his finger twitching. He was unable to control it. He then saw a doctor and was diagnosed with Parkinson's.

Although he never received a real high school diploma, Fox was given an honorary high school diploma from John Dewey High School in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York, when he spoke at their graduation in 1984.

Has a theatre named after him located in his hometown of Burnaby, B.C., Canada.

He received his G.E.D. in 1995.

Received his first guitar for christmas when he was 8. He taught himself how to play.

He was on Planet Hollywood's Wall Of Fame.

He is good friends with Boston Bruin's Legend, Cam Neely. He attended the retirement of Neely's number on January 12th, 2004 at the Fleet Center in Boston.

NBC President Brandon Tartikoff didn't like him because he couldn't see his face looking good on a lunchbox. Ironically, Fox did not allow this type of marketing when the Family Ties became popular.

Negotiated the deal for Family Ties from a phone booth outside a now defunct Pioneer Chicken restaurant in Hollywood because he had no phone at home. He was told the network would need to call and he said he was only home between the hours of four and five. So he waited for the call and fortunately was there to answer it and secure the Family Ties role.

Accidentally injured co-star James Woods's finger on the set of The Hard Way (1991). Woods was throwing him into a popcorn machine when his finger got caught in the button hole of Fox's jacket and dislocated it.

While filming Teen Wolf a location scout was in the same neighborhood and he asked what company he was with. The scout said it was for the new Spielberg movie called "Back to the Future". He remarked how it sounded like a good movie and how he hoped someday he'd be part of a film like that. When Eric Stolz was fired as Marty McFly on Back to the Future, Fox went on to replace him and the ambition came true.

Announced he is leaving "Spin City" (1996) because of Parkinson's disease. [January 2000]

He, Jim Carrey and the late Raymond Burr head the list of top Canadians in U.S. television compiled by Banff Television Festival, June 2002.

"Family Ties" (1982) creator Gary Goldberg didn't like him after his first audition stating that he played Alex too smart-allecky. Casting director Judith Wiener fought for him so Goldberg gave him one more chance. He approached the second audition differently and was later called and offered the part.

There is a pub in London, Ontario called "The Alex P. Keaton" in honor of his character on "Family Ties"

Shares a birthday with Johnny Depp and Natalie Portman.

Due to his suffering from Parkinson's Disease, during his run on "Spin City" (1996), he often hid his right hand in his pocket.

Ranked #23 in TV Guide's list of "TV's 25 Greatest Teen Idols" (23 January 2005 issue).

His best-known roles, Alex Keaton and Marty McFly, both contain numerous references to Ronald Reagan. Alex Keaton is a Conservative Republican whose hero is Ronald Reagan. In Back to the Future, Marty informs an incredulous Doc Brown that Ronald Reagan, the actor, becomes the President of the United States. In Back to the Future Part II, Marty goes into the Cafe 80s, which is "hosted" by a computer-generated video image of President Reagan. In Back to the Future Part III, he almost got to work with Reagan himself. By this time Reagan's second term was drawing to a close, if not already over, so Zemeckis offered him the role of the 1885 Mayor of Hill Valley, which may have been in reference to Reagan's first public office, that of Governor of California.
