Although she has been acting since 1978, she is still best known for her mid-80s role of Sgt. Makepeace in the popular British legal drama "Dempsey & Makepeace", where she met her current husband, Michael Brandon.

Since then, Barber has played in many popular television series in Great Britain, notably "Eastenders", "Dempsey and Makepeace" and "The Bill". She also played in several films, including "visitors" in 1993 and "Thunderbirds" in 2004.

Apart from her acting career, Barber is also passionate about music and released a solo album in 1988 entitled "Against the Wind". She is also an activist for animal rights and is a member of the animal defense group "Viva!".
