Beatrice Arthur was born in New York but grew up in Maryland. She began her career in the theater in the 1940s. She was noticed in 1954 on Broadway in the English adaptation of "the Opera of four Sous" by Bertold Brecht and Kurt Weill. In 1956-1957, she made regular appearances in the emission of the comic Sid Caesar, "Caesar's Hour".

Still on Broadway, she creates the role of Yente in "a roof violin" by Joseph Stein, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick in 1964 with Zero Mostel, then that of Vera Charles in Mame de Jerry Herman, Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee in 1966 alongside Angela Lansbury, a role she resumed in the cinema in 1974.

But it is the small screen that truly reveals Beatrice Arthur to the general public with the role of Maude Finley in the series "All in the family" in 1971. Its success is such that it is offered its own derivative series entitled "Maude ", broadcast from 1972 to 1978 and which will be adapted in France under the title" Maguy "with Rosy Varte in the 1980s.

Seven years later, she won the role of Dorothy Zbornak in "The Golden Girls" (the crisp), broadcast from 1985 to 1992. The series which met a huge success is only stopped with the departure of the actress who want to move on. She then made several appearances in series, notably "Malcolm", then sets up a one-woman show that she plays through the United States.

She died at her home in Los Angeles following cancer.

In 1970, Arthur made his debut on television by playing the role of Maude Findlay in the sitcom "Maude". She has received numerous awards for this role, including four Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe. In 1985, she joined the cast of "Golden Girls" as Dorothy Zbornak, a character she interpreted for seven seasons. She won an Emmy Award for this role in 1988.

In addition to her acting career, Arthur was also an activist for the rights of lesbians and gays and got involved in several LGBT rights associations. She died on April 25, 2009 at the age of 86.
