Gene Sheldon, born Eugene Search on February 1, 1908 and died on May 1, 1982, was an American comic actor known especially for his role of Mute Bernardo in the TV series Zorro by Walt Disney.

Gene Sheldon was born in Columbus in Ohio in the United States. He changed his name in Sheldon, a name he chose on a street plate.

He is the son of Ada and Earl Search. Gene began to take an interest in show business thanks to her magician father who had invented a version of the woman cut in half. Gene was about 13 years old at that time, he appeared in the issue as the girl cut in half. He started working first in a shoe factory and then in a music store.

Gene knew her first artistic work on Toledo radio in 1925 and continued successful in the entertainment world for ten years. Influenced by Harpo Marx (the Marx Brothers), his specialty was the mime. In 1936, Gene began a three -year tour in Europe, appearing at the theater in a Vaudeville in Paris, Berlin and other capitals. He played for six months at the Palladium in London. In Broadway in 1940, he appeared in the priority premium musical, which turned for a year.

Gene started Hollywood in a comedy by Lewis, Three Ring Circus. Walt Disney signed with him a long contract which began with Zorro from 1957 to 1959. The favorite pastime of Gene was cooking and photography. He made his developments himself. He loved fishing and listening or playing the guitar and banjo. Still with Disney, Gene played in Toby Tyler with Henry Calvin (Sergeant Garcia in Zorro) in 1960. Gene played the role of Sam Treat, a guide of Toby in the film, Clown and animal trainer. The two accomplices also played together in Babes in Toyland in 1961.

He then took a semi-retirement, making some appearances on television and in varieties.

Gene married Margaret McCann in Las Vegas on December 11, 1944. They had a boy and a girl.

Gene will remain forever the famous silent servant and alleged deaf in Zorro. Gene's facial expressions fed the relations between Diego (Guy Williams) and him. Although he does not say a word from the series, Gene succeeds in giving an extraordinary dimension to her character.

Gene died in Tarzana near Los Angeles, a heart attack at 74.
