George Gaynes (né George Jongejans) (b. May 16, 1917) is a Finnish-American actor, born in Helsinki, Finland. He is an accomplished Broadway actor, as well as a film and television star in the United States.

Gaynes is perhaps best known to movie fans as the male lead, John Van Horn, on the soap opera in the movie Tootsie and as Commandant Eric Lassard in the cult classic Police Academy. Gaynes also starred in the latter's its six sequels. To televisions audiences, he may be best remembered as the often gruff but otherwise kind and loveable Henry Warnimont on the 1980s series Punky Brewster.

His best known role was his character from Henry Warnimont in Punky Brewster. Previously, he had a career in opera in France and Italy, before the 2nd World War. After the war, he began his career in the United States. He alternates musical scenes, comedies, dramas, and in particular in the American tour of "My Fair Lady". He is also known for playing Commander Lassard in several "Academy Police".

George Gaynes was an American actor born May 16, 1917 in Helsinki, Finland. He is best known for having played the role of commander Eric Lassard in the series of comedy films "Police Academy" and for having played Henry Warnimont in the television series "Punky Brewster".

Gaynes began his acting career in the theater, playing in Broadway and London productions. He also appeared in films such as "Tootsie" (1982) and "The Way We Were" (1973), as well as in television series like "Mas*H" and "The Love Boat".

In addition to his role as Commander Lassard in the series "Police Academy", Gaynes also played the role of judge Reinhold in the films "Cocktail" (1988) and "The Last Resort" (1994). He was also nominated for an Emmy Award for his performance in the television series "All in the family".

Gaynes died on February 15, 2016 at the age of 98. His acting career was rich and varied, and he leaves behind an important heritage in the entertainment industry.
