He was known to have played in films such as The Seven Year Itch (1955), The Girl Can't Help It (1956) and The Long Hot Summer (1958).

Ewell began his acting career in Broadway, where he has played in many plays. He won a Tony Award in 1950 for his performance in The Seven Year Itch. In 1955, he received a Golden Globe Award for the best male performance in a supporting role for his role in The Seven Year Itch.
