Manimal was an American television series which was broadcast in 1983. The series featured Simon Maccorkindale in the role of Jonathan Chase, a man who had the ability to transform into any animal he wanted. Using this capacity, Chase helped the police to solve crimes and to catch criminals by turning into different animals that allowed him to access inaccessible places or to surprise criminals.

Chase was a university professor and an expert in zoology, which gave him an in -depth knowledge of animals and their behavior. He had been drawn into the art of transformation by his grandfather, which was also endowed with this capacity. Although the series was canceled after only eight episodes, it was greeted by criticism for its original intrigue and its impressive special effects for the time.

During the series, Chase used his capacity to transform into a wide variety of animals, including a lion, a wolf, an eagle, a tiger and even a snake. He often worked with Inspector Brooke Mackenzie, played by Melody Anderson, to resolve crimes and catch criminals. Although the series was canceled after only eight episodes, it has won a certain popularity as a classic television worship.

Trivia

Transformations (see photos in the gallery)

The first part of the process consists in the creation of a mask, from the face of Simon Maccorkindale. To do this, the actor must remain motionless for several hours, in order to apply several layers of liquid latex on his face and his neck. From this "main" mask, several other masks are created. They are then verified and corrected if necessary, based on photos of the actor.

The transformation sequence is in fact made up of several unique sequence, mounted end to end. A different mask is used for each sequence, so as to view the evolution of the transformation.

The transformation of the arm is carried out from a dummy arm, which was activated mechanically, to accentuate the transformation effect.

To make makeup operations profitable which lasted 6 hours for the black panther, the scenes were filmed from dawn at night.

Makeups were made by a master of the genre: Stan Winston.

The first episode was broadcast on 09/30/1983 on NBC but the American public sulks the series; The NBC television channel will suspect the series after only 3 months. In France it works well, the first episode is broadcast on 06/26/1985 on FR3.
