Synopsis

A British spy resigns from his post for personal reasons. Barely arrived at his house, he is gassed and imprisoned in a village where people are dressed in multicolored taulards, and a huge white ball serves as a guard. The former spy then becomes No. 6 (because all the inhabitants have no name just a number) and will thwart all the statagems of n ° 2 which succeed one another to admit it. The last episode will reveal which is n ° 1 which directs this village and will surprise more than one.

The prisoner (The Prisoner in English) is a British-American television series in 17 50-minute episodes, created by the screenwriter and director Patrick McGoohan and broadcast between September 29, 1967 and February 1, 1968 on the ITV channel. The series was broadcast in France in 1968 on the first channel of ORTF, under the title Le Village.

The prisoner tells the story of a secret agent, known only as "number six", which is removed and taken to a mysterious place called "the village". Number six is faced with incessant attempts to identify and manipulate on the part of the village authorities, who want to make him disclose the secrets he has. Number six resists these attempts by trying to escape and discover the truth about the village and its leaders.

The series was praised for its innovative approach to science fiction and television in general, with complex themes such as individual freedom, mental manipulation, surveillance and identity. The prisoner was also influenced in the emergence of the gender of "paranoia thriller" in the 1970s.

The prisoner was produced by McGoohan and George Markstein, with McGoohan in the role of number six and Leo Mckern in that of number two, the main antagonist of the series. The series was shot mainly in the studios of Pinewood and in the village of Portmeirion, in Wales.

Despite his critical success, the prisoner was canceled after only 17 episodes due to creative disagreements between McGoohan and the ITV channel. However, the series has won a solid base of fans over the years and has been largely considered an icon of British television. In 2009, the series was ranked 68th in the list of 100 best series of all time by the Writers Guild of America.
