Star Trek: Lower Decks has introduced us to the rebellious character of Lieutenant Junior-Grade Beckett Mariner. While she may appear to be a complete rebel, we believe that Mariner is actually the most realistic Starfleet officer of them all.

However, it’s important to note that even the most revered Starfleet officers, such as Captain Kirk and Captain Picard, have disregarded protocol when necessary. Mariner’s willingness to shun protocol in favor of doing what she believes is right makes her a standout character in Star Trek.
She Hates Promotions
Unlike most characters in Star Trek who strive for promotions and career advancement, Mariner dislikes promotions and has been demoted multiple times in the past. In a world where all needs are taken care of, promotions may not hold the same appeal as they do in our world. Mariner’s rejection of promotions aligns her with the likes of Commander Riker, who turned down the promotion to Captain in order to stay with his friends on the Enterprise.

Mariner stands out from other Star Trek characters by her love for getting into fights. While this may seem unusual, in a universe where injuries can be easily healed, it’s only natural that some individuals would enjoy engaging in physical altercations. Characters like Kirk and Picard also had a penchant for fighting when they were younger, highlighting the legacy Mariner is continuing.
She Violates the Prime Directive
The Prime Directive, which forbids interference with alien life and society, is a fundamental rule for Starfleet officers. Mariner, however, frequently violates this directive and even voices her disdain for it.
