Crossover Star Trek : Lower Decks et Strange New Worlds s’annoncent au NYCC 2023

Star Trek fans, get ready for some exciting news! At the Star Trek Universe panel during New York Comic Con 2023, showrunners Mike McMahan and Akiva Goldsman shared exclusive details about the groundbreaking Paramount+ crossover episode, “Those Old Scientists.” This crossover episode brought together beloved characters from Star Trek: Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds, creating a unique and thrilling viewing experience for fans.
The Unlikely Origin of the Crossover
Believe it or not, the idea for this crossover came out of a seemingly mundane situation. With each Star Trek showrunner vying to use different legacy characters, Alex Kurtzman, the overseer of the Star Trek universe, decided to bring all the showrunners together for a monthly Zoom meeting. The goal of these meetings was for each showrunner to justify why they should have certain characters and, perhaps more importantly, why the other showrunners shouldn’t.
However, this unexpected collaboration quickly took an unexpected turn. Goldsman revealed, “We all kind of decided that we liked each other.” The showrunners began contemplating the possibility of working together and exploring crossover opportunities.
From Animation to Live-Action
Initially, Goldsman and his co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers considered creating an entirely animated crossover. But as they delved deeper into the idea, they discovered that there were writers on Strange New Worlds who had experience with both live-action and animation. This revelation sparked a new plan – bringing the characters from Lower Decks to the live-action world of Strange New Worlds.
This collaboration was a profound experience for McMahan and the Lower Decks team. McMahan expressed his excitement about having Lower Decks characters, played by Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid, in the live-action setting alongside familiar faces from Strange New Worlds. He described it as a “meaningful” experience and noted that it gave them a unique opportunity to see how the other show is created.
An Unexpected Setback
Unfortunately, McMahan’s excitement was dampened when he faced a Covid scare and couldn’t be present on set during the shoot. He humorously shared his disappointment, stating, “It was just photo after photo of Tawny and Jack hanging out with [director Jonathan] Frakes! And having such a good time! It was like they were doing it on purpose!”
Naturally, McMahan expressed his desire for another crossover opportunity so he could finally join in the fun. And to the delight of fans, Kurtzman enthusiastically responded, “Yes. Absolutely.” This opens up the possibility for even more exciting crossovers in the future!
So, should we keep an eye on the horizon for any upcoming announcements? With the third season of Strange New Worlds and the fifth season of Lower Decks currently in the works, there’s no telling what surprises are in store for Star Trek fans!
