Exciting News for Marvel Fans: A New Black Panther Spinoff Series is in the Works!
Expansion of the Black Panther Universe
A new animated series called Eyes of Wakanda is currently under development at Marvel Studios. This upcoming spinoff series will make its way to Disney+ and is poised to expand the Black Panther franchise as well as Marvel’s animation division. The announcement was made during a screening of What If…? season 2, providing viewers with a glimpse into the future of Marvel’s animated projects.
Background and Plans for the Series
Since the launch of Marvel original shows on Disney+, only one animated series, What If…?, has been released. However, the show’s critical acclaim has demonstrated the potential for Marvel Studios’ animated projects. As a result, the studio has three new animated shows in the pipeline—Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (formerly Spider-Man: Freshman Year), X-Men ’97, and Eyes of Wakanda. While the first two projects were already known, the news of Eyes of Wakanda took many by surprise.
Initially, it was announced that director Ryan Coogler was working on a Disney+ show related to Black Panther, rumored to be an Okoye-led series. However, the specifics of whether Eyes of Wakanda is that project or something else remain unclear at the moment. Nonetheless, here’s what is known about the series so far.
What to Expect from Eyes of Wakanda
Eyes of Wakanda does not have an official release date yet, but it is expected to debut on Disney+ in 2024. The official description of the show reads, “Throughout Wakandan history, brave warriors have been tasked to travel the world retrieving dangerous vibranium artifacts. This is their story.” While further details are limited, the focus on “Wakandan history” hints at possible storylines involving the ancestors of familiar MCU characters such as T’Challa and Shuri.
This exploration of Wakanda’s history opens up numerous possibilities. It could delve into the background of T’Challa’s and Shuri’s parents, shed light on the origins of the Dora Milaje members, or potentially take the form of an anthology series with different warriors and timelines in each episode. At this stage, it remains uncertain if the series will follow an ongoing plot or adopt an anthology format like What If…?
Currently, no castings have been confirmed for Eyes of Wakanda. Depending on the connections to Coogler’s project, there is a possibility of familiar characters being featured, with a potential return of actors such as Danai Gurira as Okoye. While information about the series remains limited, Marvel’s intention to release it next year indicates that work on the series is underway, and more details are likely to emerge in the near future.
