Disney + and account sharing

Disney + has announced that it will take action to stop account sharing. A new terms and conditions update has been announced and changes will be made on this subject from March 12, 2024 with a scheduling that can be different according to the countries. The measures imply that it will be prohibited to share an account outside of the household.

At present, the necessary technology for the new measures to be put in place is still being developed for official enforcement, but it is inevitable that stricter measures will be put in place in 2024.

Disney + terms and conditions

The new terms and conditions imply that account sharing may no longer be allowed outside of the household starting March 12, 2024. Users will be responsible for any use of their account by their members, and updated terms are expected to be rolled out to all countries, with different effective dates.

There are possibilities that Disney + might allow users to add members outside of the primary household to their account, assumably for an additional cost, as an exception.

Why is Disney + Cracking Down On Account Sharing?

The trend of subscribers sharing their accounts was first popularized by Netflix. Netflix decided to crackdown on password sharing after experiencing a decline in subscribers in 2022, which turned out to be a successful move for it. Disney + is now implementing stricter measures against password sharing.
Given Netflix’s success with this approach, it’s not surprising that Disney+ is also implementing stricter measures against password sharing.

How Will Disney + Enforce Account Sharing?

Disney + is expected to adopt a detection method similar to Netflix. The method typically involves analyzing a combination of IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity from logged-in devices to determine if an account is being accessed within the primary account holder’s household. Adding a system where users are required to verify their devices by entering code sent to the account holder can be a possible measure.

Given these potential measures, it’s reasonable to assume that Disney+ will have little difficulty in identifying and addressing unauthorized usage of its service by individuals using someone else’s account in the future.
