Elizabeth Debicki reveals her aversion to horror films

Even though she stars in Ti West’s upcoming slasher MaXXXine, Debicki confessed her dislike for horror movies. The actress shared that her fear of the genre originated during a teenage sleepover experience.

“Like every teenager, I went to sleepovers and birthday parties and got scared with people,” Debicki told PEOPLE. “I think my horror-watching days ended one day when I was watching — I can’t remember [which movie] — with my best friend. We were 16 and her dad, classic, went around the house and knocked on the window and scared the shit out of us.”

“I was like, I never need to be that scared again,” she added. “I’m a low-risk individual in life. I don’t like rollercoasters, I don’t like horror films. My job injects enough adrenaline into me on a daily basis, and so I generally avoid them.”

MaXXXine: the upcoming horror film

Despite her personal feelings towards horror films, Debicki stars in the upcoming horror film MaXXXine alongside Mia Goth. The movie follows Goth’s character, the lone survivor of a massacre, as she pursues her dream of becoming an actress in Los Angeles.

Set in 1985 L.A., the film takes a twist as Goth’s character becomes the target of a mysterious night stalker, portrayed by Debicki. The ensemble cast also includes Kevin Bacon, Michelle Monaghan, Giancarlo Esposito, Lily Collins, and Halsey.

The future of the Maxine era in films

Director Ti West hinted that MaXXXine could mark the end of Maxine’s story but left the possibility open for further expansion. West teased that the film, set to release on July 5, will surprise viewers with unexpected twists and turns in its narrative.

As for the future, West mentioned that he has ideas for potential future movies within the same universe, possibly extending beyond a trilogy. However, the specifics of these projects remain uncertain.
