Disney and Hulu: What does the future hold?

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced in May that Hulu content will become directly available on Disney+ in the United States, thus creating a unified, one-app experience. After purchasing Comcast’s remaining stake in Hulu for over 8 billion dollars in December, Disney now has full ownership of the streaming service. This gives Disney the freedom to manage Hulu as they see fit, starting with the rollout of a beta version that has officially begun and allows subscribers of both services to access the majority of content on Disney+.

How does Hulu on Disney+ work?

Starting today, when Bundle subscribers open their Disney+ app, they will see a Hulu tile appear alongside the Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic tiles. This allows them to access a vast library of Hulu content, including award-winning Originals and next-day TV, without having to switch from one app to another. The official launch of this feature is set for March 2024, as the limited beta version is intended to help Disney better understand the consumer’s needs and wants when it comes to Hulu on Disney+ and allows parents to set up controls for what’s appropriate for their family.

What about the content?

The integration of Hulu content into Disney+ is Disney’s response to the success of the Star brand in international markets. Disney+ remains a safe space for families, and this integration will allow parents to control and establish profiles for the entire family. However, it’s important to note that both Disney+ and Hulu will still be available as standalone apps and offer separate content, with Hulu + Live TV and Premium add-ons available only within the Hulu app.
