Star Wars has always been known for its interconnectivity, with new stories enhancing and adding depth to existing ones. And in the upcoming series Ahsoka, the story of Mon Mothma in Andor is set to become even more heartbreaking.
Mon Mothma’s Struggles in Andor
In the first season of Andor, Mon Mothma serves in the Imperial Senate while secretly working to build the Rebel Alliance. She faces personal challenges and sacrifices as she navigates both her political career and her strained relationship with her husband, Perrin Fertha, and their daughter, Leida.
Mon Mothma must maintain a constant façade, hiding the knowledge and burdens of her activities from Perrin and Leida. This causes Leida to resent her mother, feeling neglected and believing that Mon Mothma prioritizes her career over their relationship.
In a desperate move to secure funds for the Rebellion, Mon Mothma agrees to arrange a marriage between Leida and Davo Sculdun’s son. This decision goes against her wishes, but she sacrifices her daughter’s happiness for the sake of the Rebellion’s future.

The Sacrifices of Mon Mothma
After the Ghorman Massacre, Mon Mothma leaves the Imperial Senate and becomes a pivotal figure in speaking out against Palpatine and forming the Rebel Alliance. She dedicates her life to fighting the Empire and restoring peace to the galaxy.
However, the fate of her family remains unknown, and there is a possibility that she may have to part ways with them for their safety once she publicly denounces Palpatine. This would be yet another sacrifice she has to make in her pursuit of freedom.
While Perrin, an Imperial sympathizer, doesn’t garner much sympathy, the potential danger that Leida might face due to her mother’s actions is a cause for concern. Even if Mon Mothma can protect her, Leida may not desire a relationship with her mother, given the secrets and lies involved, as well as her conservative leanings and favoritism towards Perrin.
The Tragedy Continues in Ahsoka
By the time of Ahsoka, Mon Mothma has become the Chancellor of the New Republic. After all she has sacrificed in Andor, it is heartbreaking to learn that the Empire might be returning with the reemergence of Grand Admiral Thrawn.
Mon Mothma’s story in Andor becomes even more tragic when we consider that everything she has gone through and given up may not prevent the Empire and its remnants from threatening the galaxy once again. Despite her efforts to defeat them, it seems that the Empire’s reign of danger is far from over.
While Mon Mothma may want to help in defeating Thrawn alongside Hera Syndulla, Ahsoka Tano, and their allies, she may be hindered by the demilitarization of the New Republic’s forces and the limited scope of her powers. The New Republic was built for peacetime, not for another war.
It remains to be seen how Mon Mothma will be portrayed in Ahsoka and how it will connect her story with Andor. Even if she only appears in a hologram, her presence will add depth and further enhance the tragedy of her character’s journey.
With the premiere of Ahsoka just around the corner on August 22, on Disney+, fans eagerly await the continuation of these interconnected stories.
