Apple TV and Gaming: A Limiting Factor

Since its introduction in 2015, the Apple TV with tvOS and App Store has not gained as much popularity as other Apple products. One of the main reasons might be the restrictions imposed by the tvOS platform, especially when it comes to gaming.

tvOS Limits Storage Usage:

One of the major limitations of tvOS is the amount of storage that apps can use. The maximum size for a tvOS app bundle is 4GB, and the apps can only access 500 KB of persistent storage on the device. This means that while tvOS apps can download additional data, the system can delete them at any time because they are considered temporary files.

Impact on Game Developers:

The restrictions imposed by tvOS have had a significant impact on game developers, especially those looking to bring console-level games to the platform. Developers like Riley Testut, behind the popular Delta emulator, have expressed their frustration with the limitations, citing them as the main reason they haven’t created an Apple TV version of their emulator.

Hope for the Future:

While the limitations of tvOS may have been understandable in the past when Apple TV models had limited storage options, the newer models starting with 64GB and even 128GB should have more flexibility. It is hoped that Apple will address these restrictions in the future, especially for the latest Apple TV models.
