Miss Univers : Le sacre de Miss Argentine remporté par une participante de 60 ans

Un 60-year-old woman saw her dreams of becoming the oldest Miss Universe contestant in history melt away in a haze of sequins and selfies Saturday at Argentina’s annual beauty pageant.

Buenos Aires annual beauty pageant

Alejandra Marisa Rodríguez, a hospital legal adviser at the age of 60, fell short of the Miss Argentina crown. However, she won the title of “best face,” one of several pageant categories including best evening gown, best swimsuit, and most elegant.

Rodríguez’s entry into the competition had been celebrated as a triumph over ageism in a youth-obsessed world, and her win at the Miss Buenos Aires competition generated global media attention that propelled her to local fame. During the contest, she expressed her gratitude towards everyone who supported her success.

New opportunities for contestants over 18

This year marked the first time in its 73-year history that the Miss Universe contest welcomed participants over the age of 18. Magali Benejam, a 29-year-old actress and model from Cordoba, was ultimately crowned Miss Argentina, beating out 27 other contestants. She will represent Argentina in Mexico City for the global competition in November.

Changes in the pageant landscape

The Miss Universe pageant, long criticized for its depiction of women, has undergone significant changes in recent years. As societal movements such as #MeToo gained momentum, the organization worked to portray the competition as more focused on minds and spirits rather than just appearances.

Controversial eligibility requirements were removed, making room for a more diverse group of contestants, including married, pregnant, lesbian, and transgender women. Despite these changes, some critics have raised concerns about the unrealistic standards set by contestants like Rodríguez, who at 60, possessed a youthful appearance that some felt could perpetuate unrealistic beauty standards for older women.
