Mon amour pour Marvel s’est transformé en corvée

Marvel Studios’ Loki Season 2 is just weeks away from its premiere on Disney+. However, there seems to be a lack of excitement and anticipation surrounding this highly anticipated show. Social media feeds, once filled with fan theories and reactions to Marvel projects, seem unaware of the upcoming season. This lack of interest cannot be solely attributed to the actors’ and writers’ strikes; it is a reflection of the studios’ unwillingness to take responsibility.

The Decline of Marvel

Marvel’s recent projects, such as the Disney+ show Secret Invasion and the movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, have received poor ratings and reviews. Thor: Love and Thunder has also faced criticism from both fans and critics. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has become increasingly complex and demanding for viewers, requiring in-depth knowledge of the Marvel universe. Yet, the payoff for this effort seems lacking, as the CGI effects and jokes often fall flat.

Although Marvel has made some efforts to diversify its characters and storylines, it continues to rely heavily on its past successes. The studio’s determination to produce an abundance of content, regardless of demand, has resulted in an oversaturation of superhero shows and movies. This makes it difficult for fans, whether casual or devoted, to keep up with the constant influx of content.

The Downside of Continuity

The MCU’s commitment to its own lore has led to convoluted plotlines that are intertwined and exhausting to follow. The studio’s reluctance to move on means that every Avenger or related character now has their own storyline, even though it might be more enjoyable for everyone to explore new narratives. Additionally, the mistreatment and exploitation of certain Marvel employees, particularly VFX artists, taints the enjoyment of these movies and shows.

Fatigue and the Desire for New Stories

Ultimately, the abundance of superhero content has led to a feeling of fatigue among audiences. There is a sense that there are no real stakes anymore when there is always another Disney+ show or Marvel movie on the horizon. This over-saturation makes it impossible to be a casual fan, let alone a dedicated one. The reliance on intricate plotlines and the need for deep knowledge of Marvel’s multiverse and characters can be exhausting for viewers.

It is no wonder that people are looking for alternatives in their entertainment choices. The upcoming movies of summer 2023, such as Barbie, which offers a fun feminist story, and Oppenheimer, a biopic about a scientist, provide a refreshing break from the explosion-heavy superhero flicks. If given the choice between a doll movie with feminist undertones and yet another alien invasion plot, many would opt for the former.
