Netflix propulse Colman Domingo vers une nomination aux Oscars avec “Rustin” ?

Colman Domingo steals the spotlight in the upcoming biopic “Rustin,” portraying the iconic gay civil rights leader Bayard Rustin. Directed by George C. Wolfe and written by Julian Breece and Dustin Lance Black, the film tells the inspiring true story of Rustin’s role in organizing the 1963 March on Washington during the civil rights movement. Domingo’s performance is so powerful and immersive that it feels like he’s channeling Rustin’s spirit.
A Performance Worth Recognition
Domingo’s portrayal of Rustin has garnered widespread acclaim, with many comparing it to Oscar-winning performances that showcased actors disappearing into their roles. His charisma, passion, and emotional depth make viewers feel like they’ve witnessed the real Rustin on screen. It would be a crime to exclude Domingo from the best actor lineup at the Academy Awards, especially considering the historic significance of his potential nomination as the first ever Afro-Latino in that category. In the Academy’s history, only four Latino actors have been nominated for best actor, with only one winner. Similarly, only five Black actors have won best actor in the past 95 years.
A Focus on Heroes
One of the most moving aspects of “Rustin” is its examination of the various heroes of the civil rights movement. The film highlights not only historical figures like Martin Luther King Jr., portrayed by Aml Ameen in a refreshing and more subdued take on the leader, but also lesser-known heroes, such as the trash collectors who played a prominent role. Importantly, the movie doesn’t shy away from Rustin’s sexuality. Instead, it openly explores his relationships with a preacher and one of his closest confidantes, providing a refreshing representation of LGBTQ+ experiences in Black culture.
The Challenges of Awards Season
Despite its critical acclaim, “Rustin” faces the challenge of gaining recognition during awards season. Films depicting civil rights and Black heroes often struggle to attract industry voters, even when receiving praise. However, if Netflix executes an effective campaign promoting Domingo’s performance, there’s still a chance for the film to secure a best picture nomination. The largest branch of the Academy is the Actors Branch, so the more votes Domingo receives, the greater the likelihood that “Rustin” will also be among their top 10 favorite movies of the year.
While the artisan races present a trickier road, notable aspects of the film such as Lenny Kravitz’s uplifting original song “Road to Freedom” and its potential for recognition in categories like production design, costumes, makeup, and hairstyling give it a fighting chance. Additionally, the film could be a strong contender for the best cast ensemble category at the SAG Awards, with a talented supporting cast that includes Glynn Turman, Audra McDonald, Gus Halper, Johnny Ramey, and CCH Pounder.
A Hopeful Future
With its powerful and timely story, “Rustin” deserves to be recognized and remembered among the great films of our time. Produced by Bruce Cohen and Tonia Davis, the film will open in select theaters on November 3 and stream on Netflix on November 17. Let’s hope that Colman Domingo’s exceptional performance won’t be overlooked, as we’ve seen with previous Oscar snubs like “Selma” in 2014.
