She-Hulk : un budget plus important que Obi-Wan Kenobi

Marvel Studios and Disney unexpectedly spent a significant amount of money on a miniseries released in 2022, which has left fans questioning why the project fell short despite its hefty budget. The controversial series in question is the Tatiana Maslany-fronted She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, which promised to bring a fresh and more mature take on the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Unfortunately, the show failed to impress audiences, and its poor CGI, narrative choices, and lack of compelling villains contributed to its disappointing performance.

According to a recent exposé by Variety, the cost of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law was shockingly high. The reported budget for a single episode was $25 million, potentially totaling $225 million for the entire nine-part season. This staggering figure raises questions about the series’ failure, as it received a larger budget compared to other highly-anticipated shows like Obi-Wan Kenobi. Marvel’s Moon Knight, for instance, which featured six episodes, reportedly cost $147.9 million, averaging around $24.6 million per episode.

Comparing She-Hulk to other successful shows adds further intrigue. Obi-Wan Kenobi, which debuted on Disney+ in May 2022, had a budget of only $90 million for the entire miniseries. Despite the lower budget, it garnered millions of viewers and became the most-watched Disney+ original series premiere globally. This raises questions about the allocation of resources and whether Marvel underestimated the demands and potential of She-Hulk.

These reports also shed light on Disney’s investment strategies. While the company has been known to allocate obscene amounts of money to marketing campaigns and blockbuster films like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, it seems that the budget for She-Hulk was not utilized effectively. Additionally, while shows like WandaVision and Hawkeye reportedly had similar costs to She-Hulk, they utilized practical sets and required less CGI and VFX work.

The limited budget for Obi-Wan Kenobi suggests that Disney may be putting more money into Marvel moving forward, potentially leaving Star Wars with fewer resources. However, Lucasfilm still has several exciting projects in development, including a crossover event in the “Mando-Verse” and a solo movie featuring Daisy Ridley’s Rey, indicating that the franchise is not being abandoned altogether.

It remains uncertain whether She-Hulk or Obi-Wan Kenobi will receive subsequent seasons. The fate of these shows and their casts hinges on the decisions made by Disney. It is clear, however, that the company needs to reevaluate its release strategy and financing to ensure a more successful and cost-effective approach. Investing in theatrical releases, which have a higher chance of earning back their budgets, could be a more sound option than relying solely on streaming platforms.

Ultimately, Disney must be more selective with its franchise content and hire skilled filmmakers who can maximize smaller budgets. This approach will not only benefit the company but also potentially save its TV business from an inevitable demise. While giving She-Hulk a higher budget than Obi-Wan Kenobi may have seemed unfair, it highlights the need for better planning and investment decisions within Disney.
