Netflix’s adaptation of “One Piece” has garnered attention for its portrayal of the show’s iconic outfits. In the first season, Nami, played by Emily Rudd, wears more reserved costumes than what fans are accustomed to. In an interview, costume designer Diana Cilliers explains the thought process behind these changes.

Preserving Innocence and Purity

When creating costumes for “One Piece,” Cilliers aimed to maintain the series’ innocence. In the anime, Nami’s wardrobe becomes increasingly revealing as the story progresses. However, in the live-action adaptation’s first season, Nami has yet to undergo this transformation. Cilliers emphasizes that the costume team was conscious of the alterations made to the character’s look, striving to strike a balance between innocence and plot development.

Focusing on Nami’s Nurturing Personality

Cilliers reveals that the costume team initially incorporated short skirts into some of Nami’s outfits. However, in the Netflix series, they wanted to emphasize Nami’s nurturing nature. Despite her initial doubts about joining Luffy and his pirate crew, Nami takes on a guiding role in the first season. According to Cilliers, Nami acts as a big sister figure, caring for and supporting those around her. This characterization influenced the choice of more reserved costumes for Nami.

Comparison to Other Netflix Adaptations

“One Piece” is not the first Netflix live-action series to feature changes in the outfits of female characters. However, in this case, fans have largely praised the costumes for staying true to the source material. In contrast, the 2021 Netflix adaptation of “Cowboy Bebop” faced criticism for giving Faye Valentine more reserved clothing. Jane Holland, the costume designer for “Cowboy Bebop,” defended the decision, emphasizing that it was made by a team of women with a different interpretation of the character.

The live-action adaptation of “One Piece” is now available for streaming on Netflix.
