La franchise ‘Star Wars’ en difficulté s’éloigne de Disney+

Fresh off the disappointing response to Ahsoka, Star Wars is set to find new homes beyond Disney+.

A New Era for Star Wars

Star Wars, a cultural phenomenon that began with George Lucas in 1977, found a new home in 1986 when Disney CEO Michael Eisner tapped into the creative vision of Lucas and launched the Star Tours attraction at Disney Parks. Decades later, in 2012, Disney acquired Lucasfilm, marking the start of a new era for the franchise under the Disney banner.

Disney’s Commitment to Star Wars

Despite mixed reactions to the sequel trilogy, Disney has remained committed to Star Wars. Since the launch of Disney+, numerous Star Wars TV shows have been produced, including the highly successful The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. These shows, along with the films, have been exclusive to Disney+ and have played a crucial role in the streaming platform’s success.

Audience Fatigue and Controversies

However, the constant stream of Star Wars content has led to audience fatigue. Disney CEO Bob Iger himself acknowledged that there may have been an oversaturation of the franchise in recent years. Additionally, controversies surrounding elements such as lightsaber choreography and characterization have divided the fandom and created tension around Disney and Star Wars.

Star Wars Expands

Amidst these challenges, Star Wars is now expanding beyond Disney+. Recent licensing agreements between Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery’s Turner Networks have allowed the films to be available on Disney’s linear networks, including ABC, FX, and Freeform. This move provides more outlets for fans to enjoy Star Wars content and relieves some of the pressure on Disney+.

With Star Wars reaching a wider audience, there is hope for the future of the franchise. Sustaining fan interest may be challenging, but these new opportunities offer a fresh start for Star Wars.
