A Struggle for Adaptation

Lynch’s Vision
Dune became the fourth attempt at adapting Frank Herbert’s novel, and with a solid script in place, Lynch took on the challenge. With his previous successes, including Eraserhead and The Elephant Man, Lynch was a rising star in the industry.
After going through various drafts of the screenplay, Lynch condensed the planned two-movie series into a single film. With a budget of $40 million, production began in Mexico, where the team hoped to cut costs. Despite facing numerous challenges, including poor infrastructure and disease, they managed to complete principal photography after six months.
The film initially ran for four hours but was eventually trimmed down to two at the request of the studio. This resulted in extensive cuts and reshoots, leading to what many consider to be a prime example of “studio interference.”

Upon its release, Dune received harsh criticism for its perceived incoherence, even from Lynch himself, who distanced himself from the film. However, it has developed a fervent following over the years.
