“Wài Pó and Nǎi Nai” talks about thriving friendships across the generations

The 17-minute film features the life of two grandmothers, Wài Pó and Nǎi Nai, and celebrates the life and love of these two women who are best friends. The filmmaker, Sean Wang, took some time to film his grandmothers’ everyday life. In 2021, he moved from New York City to Los Angeles, so he was able to stay with them and capture their daily lives.

This movie shows the humorous daily life of both women in dialogue in both Mandarin and English. Wài Pó and Nǎi Nai are his maternal and paternal grandmothers, respectively. They live together in the film. Their bond shows their strong friendship, love, and shared experiences in life.

Wang celebrates praise his “Nǎi Nai and Wài Pó”

Wang’s film received a nomination for “Documentary Short Film,” among other different accolades. Some of these are, the Grand Jury Prize, Audience Award at SXSW film festival, Grand Jury Awards at AFI Fest and SIFF 2023, and a slot on the IDA Shortlist and Special Jury Recognition at LAAPFF 2023.

Disney Branded Television’s intention to acquire the documentary in 2023 coincides with the first installment of Disney’s “People and Places” relaunch, a revival of Walt Disney’s documentary film series in the 1950s and 1960s. Marjon Javadi, vice president of original documentaries at Disney Branded Television, highlights the deep emotional impact and focus on family of “Nǎi Nai and Wài Pó” while celebrating 100 years of The Walt Disney Company.
