Nouvelle alerte pour certains contenus Netflix et Disney+

Streaming giants like Netflix and Disney+ are considering adding a new warning to some of their popular shows and movies. In recent years, Netflix has faced competition from platforms like Disney+, Max, Amazon Prime, and Hulu. However, thanks to measures like password crackdowns, Netflix has seen a significant increase in subscribers and revenue. Netflix has also revolutionized the film industry by allowing award-winning movies to be released directly on their platform, without the need for a theatrical release.

Disney+ initially attracted subscribers by offering a vast library of Disney content. However, to compete with other streaming platforms, Disney+ started creating its own original content, such as The Mandalorian and new Marvel series. Despite its success, Disney+ recently experienced a decline in subscribers, which could be attributed to price hikes and password sharing crackdowns, similar to what Netflix has implemented.

Both Netflix and Disney+ have also added warnings before certain films and shows, particularly those with potentially controversial or offensive scenes. For example, scenes from Disney classics like Dumbo and Lady and the Tramp have sparked debates regarding racial portrayals. Disney+ has responded by placing warnings before these films, acknowledging the harmful impact of these portrayals. Recently, Disney+ has also updated these warnings to display before the movies start, with a more detailed message urging viewers to spark conversation and create a more inclusive future.

In a separate issue, the anti-discrimination organization Changing Faces has called for disclaimers to be added to movies and TV shows that depict scarred characters as villains. The organization believes that such depictions can reinforce negative stereotypes and contribute to the stigmatization of people with visible differences. Examples cited include characters like Darth Vader in Star Wars and Scar in The Lion King. Changing Faces has reached out to Netflix, but several Disney movies, including The Lion King and various Star Wars films, are mentioned as potential offenders.

The addition of these warning systems raise important questions about the responsibility of streaming platforms in addressing potential controversies and promoting inclusivity. Should movies with potentially offensive scenes come with a warning? And should characters with visible differences be better represented on screen?
