The Story
Elizabeth Thomas, portrayed by Summer Howell, was a young high schooler who simply wanted to make friends. Unfortunately, her path crossed with Tad Cummins, a married and respected teacher at her school, played by Michael Fishman. Cummins gained Elizabeth’s trust, making her feel safe and loved. Over the course of several months, he groomed her and eventually coerced her to run away with him after another student witnessed them sharing a kiss.
Elizabeth’s abduction sparked a nationwide manhunt, and her month-long ordeal finally came to an end when they were found in northern California and Cummins was arrested. During her captivity, Elizabeth endured unimaginable sexual abuse. To make matters worse, she faced backlash from her own community, as some believed she was partly responsible for her own kidnapping.
However, Elizabeth displayed incredible bravery and testified against Cummins in court. Thanks to her courage, the once trusted teacher was sent to prison for his heinous crimes.
