SK Broadband s’associe à Netflix et met fin aux poursuites

SK Telecom (SKT), the South Korean operator, has reached a strategic partnership with Netflix to put an end to their ongoing disputes over network traffic payments. This collaboration will enable SKT and its subsidiary, SK Broadband, to launch content packages that combine mobile and IPTV offerings, integrating Netflix’s ad-supported price plan. The new products resulting from this partnership will be gradually released from the first half of 2024.

Improving Entertainment Experiences

Through this partnership, SKT, SK Broadband, and Netflix will also explore the use of AI technologies developed by Korean companies. These technologies include conversational user interfaces and personalized recommendation systems, which will contribute to enhancing the entertainment experiences of the Korean audience. Tony Zameczkowski, Netflix’s Vice President of APAC partnerships, expressed his confidence in the potential of this collaboration to reach a broader Korean audience and improve their entertainment experiences.

A Stepping Stone Towards Becoming an AI Company

Choi Hwan-seok, the head of SKT’s corporate strategy office, highlighted the company’s commitment to evolving into an AI company. This partnership with Netflix forms part of SKT’s broader strategy to work together with various domestic and international players in the industry. By embracing AI technologies and collaborating with global leaders in content streaming, SKT aims to enhance its position in the market and offer innovative solutions to its customers.

The resolution of the disputes between SK Broadband and Netflix comes after SK Broadband filed a legal case against the streaming giant in October 2021. The case sought compensation for the increased network traffic caused by Netflix’s services. The impact of this partnership goes beyond the two companies involved, as it has sparked discussions in South Korea’s parliament about fair network access pricing for streaming providers like Netflix and Google.
