Sofia Coppola, la série Apple TV+ annulée à cause d’une protagoniste peu aimable

Sofia Coppola’s Apple TV+ adaptation of Edith Wharton’s novel The Custom of the Country has been cancelled due to the unlikeable nature of its female protagonist.

Development of the Project

In an interview with The New York Times, the Oscar-winning director revealed that she had originally planned to develop the project as a five-hour limited series. However, due to concerns about the main character, an ambitious young woman named Undine Spragg, the streamer decided to cut the budget.

Unlikable Woman

Coppola expressed her frustration, stating that the executives at Apple TV+ didn’t like the idea of an unlikable female lead. She commented, “But that’s what I’m saying about who’s in charge.”

The Custom of the Country

Published in 1913, The Custom of the Country follows the story of the Spragg family as they relocate to New York with the goal of finding a wealthy suitor for their daughter, Undine. In her quest for social status, Undine becomes involved with various men, including Ralph, a lawyer and poet.

Undine’s Divisiveness

Coppola, who wrote a foreword for a recent reprint of the book, addressed the divisiveness of Undine’s character. She noted that men, in particular, seemed to have a problem with her, while her women friends found her fascinating. Coppola expressed her admiration and annoyance with Undine, stating that she has never loved and disliked a character as much as her.

Cancellation and Future Projects

Unfortunately, Coppola’s Apple TV+ adaptation of The Custom of the Country has been cancelled. However, the director’s latest film, Priscilla, based on Priscilla Presley’s memoir, Elvis and Me, has recently been released in theaters.
