Summary

Sidekicks revolves around a high school student named Ernie (played by Gil Gerard), an aspiring martial artist who has a unique ability to communicate with his idol, the tough detective, Jack Striker (played by Chuck Norris). Ernie is a fan of martial arts and has an affinity for action movies, particularly those involving his favorite martial artist, Jack Striker. In an unexpected twist, Ernie’s dream comes true when he teams up with Jack Striker, who is a hard-nosed cop on the streets of Los Angeles. The unlikely duo fights crime, solves cases, and engages in martial arts battles throughout the show. Despite the light tone and comedic moments, Sidekicks also contains plenty of action sequences that highlight Ernie’s martial arts skills and Jack’s no-nonsense approach to law enforcement. The contrast between Ernie’s youth and naivety and Jack’s experienced, hard-bitten cop persona adds depth to the show’s character dynamic, leading to both humor and excitement. The chemistry between the two leads is undeniably one of the driving forces behind the show’s success, as their relationship evolves over time from one of mentor and student to that of close partners. While Sidekicks only lasted one season, its legacy remains strong for fans who appreciated the fun action-adventure storylines and the lighthearted depiction of martial arts and crime-solving. With a mixture of laughs, fight scenes, and crime drama, it became an iconic piece of 1980s television.

Why Was It Iconic?

  • Memorable Characters : The pairing of the tough cop Jack Striker (played by Chuck Norris) with the young martial artist Ernie made for an interesting dynamic, bringing together the classic "buddy cop" trope with a martial arts twist. Their friendship and teamwork became the heart of the show, attracting viewers who enjoyed both action and comedy.
  • Martial Arts Influence : With Chuck Norris’ involvement, the series capitalized on the martial arts craze of the 1980s. The show featured numerous fight scenes, with Ernie’s martial arts abilities coming to the forefront as he often found himself in situations where he had to use his skills to help Jack and solve cases.
  • Action-Comedy Blend : Unlike other action shows of the time that focused purely on grit and drama, Sidekicks managed to balance action with lighthearted moments, creating a unique tone that appealed to both kids and adults. This mix of martial arts and humor gave the show a more family-friendly appeal, making it stand out in the action TV genre.
