SynopsisThis series features the adventures of the Virginian, a character whose name and manager of the Shiloh ranch, near Medicine Bow in Wyoming are unknown. The Virginian was an American television series broadcast between 1962 and 1971. It was one of the first black and white television series to be broadcast in color from 1965. The series was based on the novel of the same name of Owen Wister And took place in the American West at the end of the 19th century. She followed the adventures of a solitary cowboy known only as Virginian and her friends in the Ranch Shiloh, located in the fictitious city of Medicine Bow in Wyoming. The Virginian was played by James Drury in the title role and Doug McClure in the role of his trampas friend. Actor Lee J. Cobb interpreted the role of the owner of the Shiloh Ranch, Judge Henry Garth. The series featured a variety of famous guest actors, including Robert Redford, Charles Bronson, Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds. The series was renowned for its realism and loyalty to the culture of the American West. The episodes featured themes such as justice, honor and loyalty, as well as more controversial subjects such as racial discrimination and the conflict between the Amerindians and the white settlers. The Virginian was a commercial and critical success and has won numerous prizes, including two Primetime Emmy Awards. The series also inspired a spin-off entitled The Man of Shiloh, who was broadcast for a season in 1972. Although the series ended in 1971, it continues to be broadcast worldwide and is considered a American television classic.
