Summary

Three's Company takes place in a sunny apartment in Santa Monica, California, where Jack Tripper (played by John Ritter), a fun-loving and clumsy chef, moves in with two attractive women, Janet Wood (Joyce DeWitt) and Chrissy Snow (Suzanne Somers). To placate the conservative landlord, Mr. Roper (Norman Fell) and his wife, Mrs. Roper (Audra Lindley), the trio presents themselves as a platonic "couple" with the two women sharing the apartment, and Jack living as a gay roommate—this setup creates a constant source of confusion and comedic situations. As the series progresses, Chrissy is replaced by new roommates, including Cindy Snow (Jenilee Harrison) and later Terri Alden (Priscilla Barnes), but the format remains the same—misunderstandings, physical comedy, and romantic tension between Jack and his roommates. Throughout its seven-season run, Three's Company explored the lighthearted absurdities of living arrangements, dating, and friendships, all while offering a healthy dose of humor with underlying themes of friendship and miscommunication.

Why Was It Iconic?

  • Groundbreaking premise: The show's bold premise of having a man live with two women—while maintaining the illusion of a heterosexual arrangement—pushed the boundaries of sitcoms in the 1970s, a period of changing societal norms. It was both controversial and refreshing for its time, offering a comedic take on sexual and gender roles.
  • Iconic physical comedy: John Ritter's portrayal of Jack Tripper was marked by impeccable physical comedy. His ability to create laughter through slapstick humor, exaggerated gestures, and funny facial expressions made him a standout, earning Ritter critical acclaim and lasting popularity.
  • Catchy theme song: "Come and knock on our door," the catchy theme song, became synonymous with the show and remains a nostalgic tune for fans. Its upbeat melody and welcoming lyrics perfectly captured the show's lighthearted, carefree tone.
  • Unforgettable characters: The distinct personalities of the characters—especially Jack’s clumsy but lovable nature, Janet’s sensible yet sassy demeanor, and Chrissy’s naïve charm—helped establish lasting bonds with audiences. Over time, the changing dynamics of the roommate trio kept the show fresh and relatable.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Roper: The Ropers, played by Norman Fell and Audra Lindley, were an integral part of the show’s charm. Their quirky marriage, constant bickering, and misinterpretations of the roommates’ antics provided a perfect foil to the young, vibrant characters, adding a layer of humor to the show.
  • Audience reception and cultural impact: At its peak, Three's Company became a ratings powerhouse, frequently landing in the top 10 of the Nielsen ratings. It made John Ritter a household name and solidified its place as a staple of American sitcoms. The show's impact on television comedy can still be seen in later series that explored unconventional living situations and relationships.
