Foxworth began his acting career by playing in theater productions, notably at the Yale Rpertory Theater and the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. He made his debut in the cinema in 1969 in the film "The Reitivers" by Mark Rydell, in which he played the role of Lucius McCaslin.
Then Foxworth has played in many other films, such as "The Towering Inferno" by John Guillermin, "The Electric Horseman" by Sydney Pollack, and "The China Syndrome" by James Bridges. He also played in several TV movies, including "The Day After" by Nicholas Meyer and "The Thorn Birds" by Daryl Duke.
Foxworth also had regular roles in several television series, such as "Falcon Crest", where he played the role of Chase Gioberti for five seasons, and "Six Feet Under", where he played the role of George Sibley.
