Helmond is known for her role as Jessica Tate, the matriarch from the TV sitcom Soap. She was a lead player on the series from 1977 until it was cancelled in 1981. She later starred as Mona Robinson in the sitcom Who's the Boss?.

It was in 1971 that she started in Arthur Hiller's hospital with George C. Scott and Diana Rigg. The same year, she turned in Believe in Me with Jacqueline Bisset. Subsequently, the actress only played in TV movies until 1975, where under the direction of Robert Wise, she went on board the Zeppelin. A year later, it was the immense Alfred Hitchcock who hires him for a family plot. In 1977, she discovered the joys of the sitcom with Soap, parody of the Soap-Opera where she crosses Billy Crystal and Robert Urich. The series earned him a Golden Globe. In 1978, she turned in the mini-series, Pearl then in 1981, she met Terry Gilliam on the set of the delusional bandits. The actress continues to shoot in various TV movies, then in 1984, she became the hectic mona. A role that goes to delight her and she leaves from time to time to play in feature films. She thus finds Terry Gilliam in the Kafkaïen Brazil. When the series stops, the actress turns out to be less prolific, is forgotten and plays on rare occasions. In 1998, we recognized it in Las Vegas Parano… by Terry Gilliam!
