Biography for Louis Gossett Jr
Gossett made his professional acting debut at the age of 17, winning the Donaldson Award as best newcomer to theatre. He went to NYU on a basketball scholarship and was invited to try out for the NY Knicks, yet he decided to continue his acting career with a role in the Broadway production of "A Raisin in the Sun".
Louis Gossett JR began his career at the age of 17, he won a Donaldson Award as best actor from the theater. He frequented the New York University with a basketball scholarship and was invited to try his hand for the New York Knicks, however he decided to continue his career with a role in the production of Broadway "a grape in the sun" .
Louis Gossett Jr. is an American actor born May 27, 1936 in Brooklyn, New York. He is known for his roles in films such as birds hide to die, the fatal weapon 3 and 4, and for his role as coach in the sports film the dream team.
Gossett Jr. began his acting career in the mid -1950s, playing in theater and television productions. He notably played in the play The Great White Hope, which earned him a Tony Award in 1970. In 1976, he received an Emmy Award for his role in the Téléfilm Roots.
In 1982, Gossett Jr. played in the film Les Oiseaux hidden to die, for which he won the Oscar for best actor in a supporting role. He became one of the few black actors to have won this Oscar. He was also nominated for a Golden Globe for this role.
During his long career, Gossett Jr. played in many other films and television series, including the fatal weapon 3 and 4, Iron Eagle, the wings of hell and desperate Housewives. He also played in theater productions, including a grape in the sun and fencing.
In addition to his achievements as an actor, Gossett Jr. is also known for his work as a volunteer and an activist for the rights of minorities. He is a member of the National Association for the Advancement of People of Color and the Advisory Council of the National Center for Equal Opportunities.
Gossett Jr. has been rewarded many times for his work in the entertainment industry and for his humanitarian commitments. In addition to his Oscar and his Emmy, he received a lifetime Achievement Award in 2004 and was introduced to the Hall of Fame of the theater in 2010. He continues to work as an actor today.

Trivia
- Conceived and co-wrote the well known song "Handsome Johnny" with Richie Havens. As the opening act for the original Woodstock, Havens performed "Handsome Johnny", as the 8th song in that historic first set. According to Havens, "...(Gossett) had gotten it up to the 'Dunkirk war'...I brought it up to date..." (From liner notes in The Best of Richie Havens CD, 1993)
- Was named as "King of Brooklyn" at the Welcome Back to Brooklyn Festival in 1990
- Along with Stacy Keach, he was one of two actors considered for the role of the SGC's new commanding officer, General Hank Landry, on "Stargate SG-1" (1997). The role instead went to Beau Bridges however Gossett was cast as a Jaffa leader named Gerak.
