Daughter of Hugh and Kay Helgenberger, Marg was born on November 16, 1958 in Fremont in the state of Nebraska. She grew up in North Bend near the Platte River with her sister Ann and her brother Curt.
She continued her schooling at Kearney State College before being accepted at the Northwestern Alumus School of Speech in Evanston where she obtained a diploma in dramatic languages and arts. She catches the comedy virus when she plays the role of Blanche Dubois in a theatrical university production, "A Streetcar Named Desire".
A member of the team in charge of the casting of the TV series Ryan's Hope discovered it in the summer of 1981, when she plays the role of Kate, in a theatrical university production, "Taming of the Shrew", inspired by the work of Shakespeare.
Impressed by his talent, he offers him a role in the series but Marg, before embarking on this new adventure, prefe to finish his studies. She promises not to forget the role proposed by this agent. Once her studies are finished she presents herself on the set location. From that moment, she plays her first professional role as Siobhan Ryan.

- Earned a B.S. degree from the School of Speech (now the School of Communications) at Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois).
- On "ER" (1994) episode #2.21, "ER: Take These Broken Wings (#2.21)" (1996), Karen Hines, the character she played, wears a Northwestern University pullover.
- Got her start as a local news weather girl in her native Nebraska. The news producer felt her name was too long and made her change it to Margi McCarty. This was her night job. Her day job was as a meat boner at the meat packing plant where her father was a meat inspector.
- Her Hollywood home once belonged to silent movie star William S. Hart
- Six years before the premiere of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" (2000), she and Gary Dourdan starred together in an unsuccessful TV series pilot called Keys (1994) (TV).
